this unraveled. and it all has to do with tampa where, of course, u.s. central command is located and jill kelley, whom you just saw there, she was involved as a volunteer. she's no diplomatic protection whatsoever, but she was involved as a volunteer dealing with international visitors in the military apparently. so she in this capacity gets to know general petraeus and also general allen. so he gets an e-mail, she gets e-mails. he warns her that he's getting these e-mails, this is jill kelley. and jill kelley goes to the fbi and that is how this all unravels. now, speaking of general allen, he, of course, is the top u.s. and nato commander in afghanistan. he was nominated as the supreme allied commander in europe. and that nomination is on hold. but secretary panetta said that they have confidence in him. let's listen to panetta. >> no one should leap to any conclusions. no one should leap to any conclusions here. general allen is doing an excellent job at isap and leading those forces. he has my continued conference to lead those forces and continue to fight. but his nomination has been put on

correspondents, kristen welker and michael isikoff michael? >> what we learned last night, general allen, the u.s. commander in afghanistan has been implicated in this because of 20,000 to 30,000 documents exchanged with jill kelley. the tampa associatite who triggered this investigation when she complained about those menacing e-mails that she had been getting from an anonymous sourt who turned out to be paula broadwell, the woman who was having the affair with cia director david petraeus. what we were being told that the original e-mails, these anonymous e-mails from broadwell to kelley did not initially specifically reference petraeus, it talked about her, kelley's relationship with other generals at the u.s. central command. and southern command, suggesting that she was having an inappropriate relationship with them, that she ought to watch it and cut it out, as described to me from a source. we know that general allen who's now the center of this was the deputy command at central command until 2010. so, by implication, we can assume from the beginning, at least when paula broadwell began sen

star general investigated. this time it is general john allen who took over as commander of the u.s. forces in afghanistan and petraeus became director of the cia. in october, allen was also nominated by the president to be the supreme allied commander in europe, but the white house put that nomination on hold after it found out that allen is currently being investigated by the defense department for sending potentially inappropriate and flirtatious e-mails to jill kelley, the same jill kelley who received questionable e-mails from paula broadwell. the fbi's investigation into those e-mails eventually revealed broadwell's affair with general petraeus which eventually led to petraeus' resignation. remember her fbi friend that started the investigation? turns out he was also the person who called house majority leader eric cantor and told him what he knew. one more character connecting petraeus and allen in this messy web, jill's twin sister natalie, just weeks ago both generals wrote letters in support of natalie in a custody battle over her four-year-old son.
